NDLEA arrest six for concealing drugs in vegetable, shoes


Six suspected drug traffickers have been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, attached to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, AIIA, Enugu, for allegedly concealing cannabis and cocaine in vegetables and shoe soles respectively.

A statement by NDLEA spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeju, says that three of the suspects were going to China where drug trafficking was punishable by death.

Ofoyeju stated that a total of 62.663kg of drugs comprising 60.55kg of cannabis and 2.113kg of cocaine were seized from the six suspects. One of the suspects, 46 year old Ibeh Kevin Nonso, who was on his way to China, swallowed 67 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.131kg, while 33 year old Izukanne Ikenna, who was going to Hong Kong, hid 982 grammes of cocaine inside the sole of his shoes.

The only female among them, 27 year old Kenechukwu Ujunwa, was on her way to Dubai when she was arrested with 11.7kg of cannabis in dried bitter leaf vegetables. Other suspects arrested are 30 year old Agwu Jeremiah Kalu, who hid 25kg of cannabis in cartons and 43 year old Okpara Kenneth Chigozie, with 7.500kg of cannabis in his bag.

Both were about to travel to China when they were arrested. 26 year old Onyia Chukwuebube Clinton had 16.350kg of cannabis in his luggage during screening of passengers to Doha. All the suspects will soon be charged to court.
